WWII group of 3 unnamed as issued with Air Council condolence slip awarded to 913679 Sgt JW Melhuish RAF. While flying aboard RAF Lancaster R5636 of 83 Squadron RAF based at RAF Turnhouse in Scotland. John took off at 22:14 on the 11th of June 1942 from RAF Scampton for a mine laying operation in the Nectarines Area (Frisian Islands) and was lost without trace. His was one of four aircraft that failed to return. 83 SQN RAF already had one Victoria Cross recipient among its staff, autumn of 1940, with a raid on Antwerp on the night of 15 September resulting in the award of a Victoria Cross to Flight Sergeant John Hannah, a wireless operator and gunner for extinguishing a serious fire while receiving severe burns. John Melhuish, son of Arthur and Ellen, hailed from Blackheath, London and is commemorated upon the Runnymede Memorial. All medals have original silk ribbons.
