WWI Victory Medal. Crowley. Bristol. Somerset Light Infantry & later tunneller with 181 Co in Singles
€40.43
Correctly named 10457 Pte JT Crowley Som LI John Thomas Thomas Crowley was born in Bristol to Matthew and Honor in 1885. Married to Nellie Louisa Callon in 1906, by 1911, he is found living at 8 Derby Street in Redfield in Bristol. He is working as a labourer for Netham Works, Barton Hill. NETHAM CHEMICAL WORKS This was a huge site that stretched from Marsh Lane to Blacksworth Road, following the line of the Feeder Canal. Apparently it was 300 feet high and comprised of half a million bricks. It was knocked down in 1950. At its peak the chemical works had 400 -500 workers. Remarkably the huge multi national ICI company started there! The works closed in 1949, leaving vast amounts of waste material, which was the play ground for many Barton Hill Kids and was known locally as the Brillas. John enlisted and served with the 7th (Service) Bn Somerset Light Infantry and went overseas to France with then in July 1915 earning himself the 1915 Star Trio. He transferred to the 181st Tunnelling Company Royal Engineers and held the service number 151558. 181st Tunnelling Company Royal Engineers 181st Tunnelling Company formed at Steenwerck in Autumn 1915, and moved into the Rue du Bois sector. Relieved by 172nd Company in March 1916 and moved south to face Vimy ridge with Company HQ in Berles. By Spring 1917, were in Ronville near Arras, working in the caves and tunnels in that area. In 1921 we find him living at 3 Derby Street in Redfield and although out of work, his profession is noted as labourer, bleach department for Alkale Company. In 1939, we find him at 4 Blackswarth Road in Bristol, again noted as a chemical process worker. John died in 1951. The medal has an original, though faded, silk ribbon.
