Although well used, this army issue Leather Jerkin is greatly redeemed by the nicely hand painted RAF Crest of 137 Squadron Fighter – Bomber Squadron. The leather remains supple and has lost its chromed finish but would be considerably enhanced by the sympathetic application of a leather cream. There are a few minor scuffs and one small area where the leather has worn through to the lining, three of the four buttons are missing and the stitching to one shoulder seam has separated as is so often the case. The lining is in good condition and whist the label is now unreadable, 137 Squadron was disbanded in August 1945 and I believe the position of the labels in these moved to the neck in the early post war years. We will never know why an Army issue Jerkin with an Army number should have found its way into the hands of someone serving in the RAF, but 137 Squadron flew cover on D Day in Typhoons and operated from Normandy immediately after the landing, so it is possible the change of ownership took place there.
