Early 1914 Star Casualty. Hood. 2nd Bedfordshire Regiment. KIA Ypres. Menin Gate. in Casuality

Correctly named 9308 Pte E Hood 2/Bedf R Edward was born in Ditchenham, Norfolk and resided in Waltham Cross, Herts. At the outbreak of the War, the Bedfordshires had just returned from South Africa, but were quickly re-equipped and attached to 21st Brigade of 7th Division. This formation left Southampton on 5 October 1914 on board the ‘SS Winifredian’ and landed at Zeebrugge in Belgium on 7 October 1914. The Bedfordshires fought at the First Battle of Ypres (19 October – 22 November 1914) It was at the Battle of Ypres that Edward fell, killed in action. His confirmed date of death is given as the 31st of October 1914 although it may have been anytime from the 24th until the 31st. The 2nd Battalion: First Battle of Ypres – retirement from the Geluveld-Zanvoorde Road to the Menin Road on the 31st of October 1914. He is remembered on the Menin Gate. The medal has an original silk ribbon.
