A WWII group of 3, 1939-1945 Star, Pacific Star and War Medal along with Royal Engineers cap badge stamped HJ Fooks. Also an ‘adopted’ medal slip with his service number but note the back is filled out wrong. Research confirms only one HJ Fooks serving with Royal Engineers, with one other serving with the Suffolk Regiment. Hebert John Fooks was born to Joseph and Cozbi in Steeple, Dorset c1904. In 1911 we find him living at Grange Road in Wareham, Devon. By 1921, he has moved and working as a farm labourer for Tom Marks at Blackend Farm in Basingstoke. 1865855 Sgt Herbert John Fooks served with the 22nd Fortress Company Royal Engineers. He was in Hong Kong on the 8th of December 1941 when the Japanese invaded and subsequently taken prisoner during the surrender of the garrison. He is listed on rolls as a Hong Kong Defender. We see his death dated is noted from the 8th-25th of December and records show him killed but date unknown. One record is recorded as from Argyle Street POW camp. We can only speculate that Herbert was injured during the defence of Hong Kong and later, after capture, succumbed to his wounds. He is buried at Sai Wan Bay War Cemetery.
