This is a ultra rare find from the battlefield a British Lewis gun 97 round magazine which is in lovely condition for a relic pretty much totally complete which is complete with its center section which has its lovely original colour possibly some faint markings. The outer case that has some original black painted colour as well clear to see but is missing its handle. The magazine is still very solid condition does have some damage a few rust holes in the top but it still has all its internal bullet holding racks it is very solid not braking up or falling apart and has been very well cleaned perfect for display or a very rare bit for any collection and so rare to get from the battlefield in such nice condition The magazine used by aircraft of the Royal Flying corps recovered from a pond in a woodland area on the site on the old Aerodrome at Bertangles near Amiens on the Somme battlefield of 1915-1918. And comes with 4 X A5 laminated information cards with pictures and a map and is the first time i have ever had one of these from the battlefield.
Many claim that the Lewis is the first machine gun to be fired from an aircraft. The Lewis gun utilised two different magazine types, one holding 47 and the other 97 rounds for aircraft use. The 97 round drum magazine was considered too heavy for infantry
