An original 1940 dated British Army MKII Steel Helmet which belonged to a member of the Home Guard during the Second World War. This helmet is a recent shed find in Kent and is a time-warp example of a Home Guard Helmet. This pattern of helmet came into use with the British Army in the late 1930s and was the standard issue steel helmet by the outbreak of war, although the earlier MK1* helmets were also still being issued at this stage. This example still retains its original factory finish chocolate brown coloured paint finish to the underside of the rim and inside of the helmet. The exterior has been refinished with a matt, textured paint finish with some of the factory finish still present to the top side underneath this. The original owner has ad the initials ‘HG’ to the front which denotes Home Guard. The underside of the rim is marked with the maker’s initials of ‘RO Co’ along with the 1940 date. The original liner is present inside the helmet and features the cruciform shaped pad to the centre which is correct for the year. It is fitted to the helmet with the correct large size screw as seen on early production helmets. The frame of the liner is marked with the maker’s initials of ‘T. T. C.’ which denotes the maker as the Teddy Toy Company. The size of 7 1/4 is also present as is the 1940 date. The helmet comes complete with its original chin strap which is in good condition with signs of wear and age commensurate with the rest of the helmet. The original owner has added his name in ink to the chin strap. Overall this is a fine example of an early MKII helmet which has original Home Guard markings to the front. An excellent piece of Home Front memorabilia.
