King’s South Africa Medal, Bars: South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902. 4296. Pte. H. House. 13th Hussars. Slightly wounded at the Cavalry Charge of Langzeekoegat 29th April 1901 during operations in the Transvaal. Died of disease 14th July 1902 at Heilbron. The 13th Hussars played an active role in the Boer War and one of the first Cavalry Regiments sent out to South Africa, engaging in various battles including The Relief Of Ladysmith, and action at Colenso & Spion Kop from 1889 to 1902. On the Tugela the 13th Hussars attacked with the South African Light Horse in the taking of Bastion Hill on the 20th January 1899. From 10th to 21st February 1900 were part of a detached independent force. After the 21st February recrossed the Tugela with the objective of entering the besieged Ladysmith. In August 1900 the 13 th Hussars came up Van Reeman’s Pass and met MacDonalds Brigade at Hammersmith. In 1901 the 13th Hussars was brought to the Western Transvaal with the 5th Dragoon Guards to operate East of Pretoria. Followed by operations in Natal then the Transvaal, later ending with operations in Zululand Frontier of Natal in September and October 1901. Cavalry Charge At Langzeekoegat, 29th April1901. A Squadron was part of a column that was sent to attack the Laager of Hans Botha at Langzeekoegat on 29th April 1901. On reaching their destination the leading section under Corporal Cave charged the Boer outpost in a thick fog while Lt Henery Stern and the rest of the Troop charged the Laager. The charge was made with DRAWN SWORDS, was not effective because the rifles were slung on the offside impeding the right arm. Following this incident the Regiment was ordered, on 2nd June1901, to sling their rifles on the near side ( left ) and keep their Swords on the offside. During the charge Three men and four Horses were killed in the fight . One of the horses belonging to Lt Stern was hit in five places. Another Private was killed by friendly fire during the retirement to camp, and another killed on a separate patrol from Greylingstad.
