Italian M28 Sun, (Pith) Helmet as Issued to the Afrika Korps in General / other

369.64

A very nice and rather scarce example of an Italian M28 Topical Sun Helmet as used by the Afrika Korps. Due to a shortage of appropriate tropical uniform items when the Afrika Korps was dispatched in haste to North Africa to aid Mussolini, the Germans issued the Italian M28 prior to the arrival of their own Troppenhelm. Incorrectly referred to as a Pith Helmet, Pith helmets being made from the leaves of the plant, these helmets have a firm crown and brim covered in a Khaki cloth in six segments. On each side is a large single vent with a gauze, which prevents the ingress of insects as does the dome vent. The insignia is aluminium and identical to those used on the later German made helmets both, in this case showing age. The chinstrap is leather, the internal sweatband, simulated leather. Overall condition is very good and a nice addition to an early DAK collection.
